Holding a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the University of Michigan, I cherish every performance opportunity and strive to connect deeply with both fellow artists and audiences. Whether as a soloist or a chamber musician, I find immense joy in the collaborative energy of the stage.

As a piano instructor, I believe that every student is unique, bringing their own distinct gifts to their education. My passion for music drives me to listen closely to each student's needs, helping to unlock their full potential so that we may discover the joy of music-making together.

Hsiu-Jung Hou Profile

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Hsiu-Jung (Sherry) Hou began playing the piano at the age of five. She received her Bachelor of Music from National Taiwan Normal University under Chia-Wei Chung, graduating with the high honor of the YAMAHA Piano Award. She went on to earn both her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, studying under Christopher Harding.

Dr. Hou enjoys a versatile career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. As a soloist, she has won top prizes at several competitions, including the National Taiwan Normal University Concerto Competition, the MTNA Michigan Performance Competition, and the Seattle International Piano Competition. Her performance highlights include a lecture-recital on “The Theme of Childhood” at the University of Michigan, a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Ann Arbor Symphony, and a guest recital at the 2020 Seattle International Competition. An avid chamber musician, she has performed at the International Music Conference in Beijing and the Salzburg International Summer Academy. She deeply values sharing the stage with other artists, believing that chamber music allows musicians to inspire one another and share the joy of music-making.

As a dedicated pedagogue with over a decade of experience, Dr. Hou has established a warm and professional teaching studio in the Bay Area, California. Since 2025, she has also served as an adjudicator for the United States Open Music Competition (USOMC). Her teaching philosophy centers on the belief that every child is unique and brings something special to their education. This approach has led to significant success: her students have won numerous competitions, leading to performances at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and major stages in Los Angeles. Dr. Hou is committed to inspiring her students' imaginations and helping them find lifelong joy in music.
